All Optometrists know that eye exams should be an essential part of anyone’s health check-ups, especially after reaching the age 40. But there are many things patients can do to keep their eyes safe every day. In between examinations, here are some easy ways you can protect your eyes every day:

, Top Four Ways Your Patients Can Protect Their Vision

1) Wear the right sunglasses

Exposing your eyes to the ultraviolet rays of the sun may increase risks of eye problems. Such exposure can make you develop macular degeneration and cataracts. Wear lenses that promise the blockage of 99 to 100 percent of UVB and UVA rays. Wear them the whole year and not only during the summer season.

2) Follow the 20-20-20 rule.

Whenever you work on an electronic device, avoid eye strain. Take a 20-second break every 20 minutes. Try looking at something 20 feet away from you.

3) Make sure that you practice good eye hygiene.

Whenever you wear contact lenses, always wash your hands. Do this first before you put the lenses on or before you take them out. Make sure that you disinfect your contacts between uses. Avoid wearing them for a time that is longer than prescribed.

4) Check the scale.

Avoid getting overweight. It can increase your risk of glaucoma and diabetic eye disease. Consult with your doctor on how you can change your diet and exercise. Make sure that they help you in shedding your unwanted pounds. Minimizing your weight can also help you avoid other health problems.
